• [Jan 21]: THE London Assembly this week supported the establishment of a Mayoral Development Area in and around the Olympic Park. Using new powers contained within the Localism Act (2011), the Mayor's plans would create a unique mayoral development corporation (MDC) to drive regeneration and development in the area over future decades. The Corporation would also assume the full range of planning powers and responsibilities (including setting and collecting the Community Infrastructure Levy) - in effect becoming the local planning authority for the area.
Speaking as Vice Chair of the London Assembly Dee Doocey said: "The Assembly has always believed that the most important benefit of hosting the 2012 Games is the opportunity to revitalise the East End of London. The creation of a Mayoral Development Corporation sets a clear structure to deliver that regeneration and places responsibility for it firmly in the hands of the Mayor. The Assembly is determined to see that the MDC operates in an open and transparent fashion that enables local people within its boundaries to have a substantial input into the future of their neighbourhoods."
Mike Tuffrey, who leads for the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group on planning matters further commented: "We certainly shouldn't be taking over the planning powers of boroughs in perpetuity. There needs to be a clear, time limited exit clause to inject a sense of urgency to ensure the Mayor delivers the new homes London so desperately needs."
