• [Dec 09]: RICHMOND'S Tory council is setting lower service standards when dealing with vulnerable older people than when providing services to children, despite promising a 'pensioner first' policy at the last election.
Older people being transported to intensive day centres can expect journey times of up to 90 minutes, whereas children being transported to special educational needs facilities are guaranteed a maximum journey time of 75 minutes. The contract for primary schools meals includes the provision of fresh fruit and vegetables, but the council is planning to save money by removing fresh vegetables from the menu at the intensive day centres despite charging older people far more for their meals than school pupils have to pay.
Cllr Liz Jaeger, Lib Dem opposition spokesperson for adult social care, says: "We are very concerned that vulnerable older people are being treated like second class citizens by this Tory council and given a lower standard of service. Of course it is right that children get fresh vegetables, but older people deserve the same high standards. The same is true for transport services, where older people are expected to face journey times of up to 90 minutes to get to day centres, whereas children are guaranteed no more than 75 minutes."
