Conservatives reject action on air and water pollution

November 8, 2011 5:11 PM

pollution• [Nov 01]: RICHMOND, like other parts of London, has dangerous levels of localised air pollution close to its main roads. Across the capital, it is estimated that around 4,300 deaths a year from respiratory diseases such as asthma are linked to prolonged exposure to localised air pollution.

Liberal Democrat councillors recently made some modest proposals to help tackle this health risk by cleaning up the emissions of the council's vehicle fleet and encouraging local businesses to adopt green travel plans. Shockingly these proposals were dismissed by Conservative councillors out of hand as, "a thinly veiled attack on the motorist".

The Conservative Council Leader takes an equally cavalier attitude to water pollution and has recently attacked the long overdue Thames Tunnel project - aimed at preventing the 39 million tonnes a year of raw sewage that currently runs into the river from doing so - describing it as "a prestige project that should be shelved until better days."

Liberal Democrat Council Group Leader Stephen Knight disagrees, saying: "It is a national disgrace and health hazard for our Richmond Council Lib Dems are working hard to tackle dangerous levels of water & air pollution Getting young people into river to be an open sewer whenever it rains and work is a top priority for the Thames Tunnel project must not be delayed a year longer."
