• [Nov 01]: Tory Mayor Boris Johnson has decided to hike fares by a further 7 % in January, with travel cards going up by 8 %. The increases, the latest in a series of inflation-busting rises since Boris took power at City Hall in 2008, will bring the price of a single bus ride to £1.40 on an Oyster Card, or £2.30 if paid by cash. Before Boris seized power a single Oyster bus fare cost 90p - an increase of 56 % in just four years.
The abolition of the Zones 2-6 one-day travel card last year put the cost of travel up for those not travelling into central London by 74%, hitting many in our borough particularly hard. At the same time, Lib Dem Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon has exposed the scandal of Oyster overcharging which has cost Londoners millions of pounds. Passengers travelling through Richmond station were overcharged by £323,000 last year.
Munira Wilson, Liberal Democrat London Assembly candidate for South West London, said: "This is the fourth year of fare misery that Londoners will face under Boris Johnson. Munira Wilson says, "give bus users a fair deal by introducing a one-hour bus ticket"
"Since arriving at City Hall, he has hit Londoners hard by hiking up single bus fares from 90 pence to £1.40. And he has dealt a double blow to those in outer London by scrapping the 2-6 travelcard, making life even tougher for those on low incomes. The Mayor must take real action to stop Londoners being ripped off by Oyster overcharging and give bus users a fair deal by introducing a one-hour bus ticket."
