• [Oct 28]: THOSE who are disabled, homeless, have mental health problems, or are offenders are among several groups that will be affected by changes to the way the Council provides housing and other support to people in need. A review with the laudable aim of simplifying arrangements for buying these services also has a remit to shave £400,000, or 14 %, from the budget over the next two years.
Liz Jaeger, Lib Dem opposition spokesperson for adult social care, says:
"Again we are hearing from this Conservative administration that big reductions must be made because of cuts from central government. However, because Richmond raises 80 % of its money from Council tax, the 14 % reduction in government grant last year only resulted in a 0.6 % reduction in what we have available to spend.
The services in question help people live more independently and can prevent more expensive services being needed in the future. In some areas, like mental health, there is an urgent demand for additional support. By all means streamline the number of contracts and the number of providers, but don't let this exercise be a cover for service cuts to the most vulnerable."
