• [Oct 28]: THIS financial year (2011-2012) 216 new affordable homes will be handed over in the borough from schemes agreed by the former Liberal Democrat administration, more than double the average number that had been achieved in previous years.
Of the 216 new housing association homes being handed over this year, 145 are for rent and 71 for shared ownership. Cllr Stephen Knight, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said:
"Richmond has a desperate need for affordable homes, particularly for families. When we ran the council up until May 2010, we put more council land and money into affordable housing and as a result we are now seeing double the usual number of homes being completed this year. In particular we worked with housing associations to use a number of council-owned sites for affordable family homes rather than just selling them off to private developers.
"Sadly, the new administration is taking a different approach to the use of council land, such as the site of the former Avenue Centre in Teddington, which is being sold-off to private developers. This perhaps reflects that fact that the councillor responsible for managing the council's land, Geoffrey Samuel, described affordable housing as a 'very low priority' in a statement to the local press earlier this year."
