Fresh veg off the menu at Council day care centres?

October 31, 2011 10:25 AM

Cllr Liz Jaeger• [Oct 28]: MEALS for elderly and vulnerable residents attending the Council's intensive day care centres at Ham and Sheen may no longer come with fresh vegetables, if changes proposed last week go ahead.

In a bid to save money, the Tory-run council is suggesting that the contract in future should serve frozen, rather than fresh vegetables. Commenting, Liz Jaeger, opposition spokesperson on social care, said:

"Only a few years ago, the decision was taken to act on user feedback and improve day centre meals by introducing fresh food. The kitchens were adapted to enable this. It is important that meals provided to the elderly should look appetising and be tasty. We have heard a lot about maintaining services at the two remaining day centres, following closure of the Tangley and Twickenham sites.

Saving money on the meals contract, and another recent decision not to provide showers as a routine part of the service to all users, has to be questioned. I hope the Council will properly consult with users and their carers, and if they wish to continue eating fresh veg, that this will continue to be provided at no increase in cost to the user. Costs have gone up more than enough recently."
