• [Oct 14]: LIBERAL Democrats have cautioned the borough's secondary schools against breaking off ties with the local council by becoming independent academies responsible directly to Whitehall.
Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Cllr Malcolm Eady said: "Secondary school governors have a difficult choice ahead of them on whether to convert their schools into academies. I can well understand the attraction of pocketing the short-term financial inducements being offered by the government to schools that break off ties with the council, but in our view, doing so risks serious long-term damage to the borough's education system. The financial inducements can only last a few years, but the damage caused by breaking ties with the local council will last for ever.
We have a history of a very positive relationship between secondary schools and the council in this borough, which has been critical in providing expert targeted help and intervention when schools needed it. The council has also invested millions in the school buildings to improve conditions. Breaking off ties with the council will leave schools unable to benefit from this relationship in the future. Schools will also no longer have any accountability to the local community through the ballot box, as they will instead only be accountability to Whitehall."
