[Oct 06]: ADDRESSING the event at the Excel centre, which featured thousands of entrants from around the world demonstrating their skills in a wide range of industries, business secretary Vince Cable announced an investment of £20 million to boost skills in key industries such as nuclear manufacturing, hospitality and renewable energy. The sum includes £11 million of government-matched funding under bids to the Growth Innovation Fund, that will help employers create more apprenticeships and links with education and training providers.
Cable sounded a warning that the UK "does not have an internationally competitive skills base" and pointed out that it sits 19th out of 34 developed nations in the OECD index for skills above GCSE level . .
