• [Sep 30]: IN response to a question from Lib Dem deputy leader David Williams, Richmond Council has revealed that it is using hundreds of agency temps whilst making permanent staff redundant.
Cllr David Williams asked: "How many posts in the Council, apart from schools, were held by agency staff and other non-Council employees as 1 July 2011, and what were these posts, both individually and by department?"
The answer was: "The Council had 290 Agency Temps working in July 2011. The breakdown by directorate was: 34 in Environment; 159 in Adults and Community Services; 4 in Chief Executive's; 60 in Education, Children's and Cultural Services; and 33 in Finance and Corporate Services. There were an additional 50 non employees - principally interims [sic]: 8 in Adults and Community Services; 4 in Chief Executive's; 33 in Education, Children's and Cultural Services; and 5 in Finance and Corporate Services."
Cllr David Williams said: "These are truly shocking figures. At a time when long-standing council staff are losing their jobs, the Tories are spending many millions of pounds with temp agencies to plug the gaps. This cannot be good value for money."
