• [Sep 05]: UNDER the former Liberal Democrat administration, Richmond Council handed a number of public sites around the borough to housing associations - rather than sell them off to private developers - in order to create more family sized affordable homes. Last Thursday Richmond Churches Housing took possession of 4 three-bedroomed houses, in Railway Road, Teddington - the first under this scheme.
Cllr Stephen Knight, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said: "Richmond has a desperate need for family sized affordable homes and over the next few months more houses will become available. Our scheme enabled housing associations to build much needed 3 bedroom houses rather than one-bedroom flats, which private developers often provide. It also ensured that these homes are being built in parts of the borough where they are most needed."
Note: At 12 % of all housing, Richmond upon Thames has the 2nd lowest amount of social housing of any London borough (Kingston has the lowest at 11 %). The London average is over 20 %.
