• [Aug 14] Helen Duffett writes: NICK Clegg spoke to party members yesterday (Saturday) in Liverpool and Manchester, discussing last week's riots and their aftermath. His speech featured the announcement that the Government is commissioning independent research into the riots, (including research into gang culture) and cautions against "overnight policy" and "instant announcements" . .
" . . Politicians usually say at times like these, 'let's learn the lessons'. But they rarely do. This time it can be different. The burning shame we feel at the disorder on our streets has to be combined with a thoughtful determination to understand it, and an unbending commitment to stop it from ever happening again."

. . But all three leaders see improvements. The weekly leader ratings from YouGov are just out and all three see an increase in their "doing well" figures and a decline in the "doing badly" rating.
The biggest change has been for Nick Clegg who sees the positive number going up by four with a similar drop in the negative one making an eight point net change. The LD leader still has the smallest positive number and the biggest negative one. Miliband sees a four point net change with Cameron at two. Whether this is down to the riots is hard to say. Last week's polling took place while all three of them were on holiday . .
Go back on holiday, Nick!
