• [Jul 22] WHITTON Lib Dem councillor Liz Jaeger has demanded that the Tory Council explains what has happened to the promised youth cafe that was due to open in the former Nationwide premises in Whitton High Street.
Expectations were high following consultation with young people late last year on how they would like to see the building fitted out for them. Now it transpires that, like the long-awaited improvements to Whitton High Street, the project is 'under review'.
The delay is all the more frustrating given that the Council's youth workers have had to give up their local base on Percy Road. Like the Whitton and Heathfield safer neighbourhood police, the local youth workers have moved out and are now working from Twickenham.
Whitton Lib Dem councillor Liz Jaeger said: "It is over two years since I announced funding for the cafe project as the Cabinet Member for Youth Services in the previous Liberal Democrat administration. The project was chosen after a vote in which thousands of young people participated. If it takes a further two years for these much-needed local facilities to appear, many of those who voted will be out of their teenage years and never see the benefit."
