• [Jul 12] Vince Cable writes: LATE last year I experienced a very painful period after my private comments in a Twickenham advice surgery on Murdoch's media empire were broadcast to the world. The supportive comments of many local people, as well as family and friends, kept me going. The Daily Telegraph has since been condemned by the Press Complaints Commission for its use of hidden recording devices. I now think the public does increasingly identify with my feelings about News International's record although they, like me, are staggered by the reality of what has been revealed.
. . this scandal will do for the media what the financial crisis did for the banks and MPs expenses did for politics. A massive cleansing operation is required. We need a much tougher Press Complaints body with teeth and stronger rules on takeovers and media ownership with powers to break up media empires
