Tories In Schoolboy Howler On Emissions

July 7, 2011 10:31 AM

NO2 map• [Jul 06]: NEW Tory Cabinet Member, Chris Harrison, revealed a woeful ignorance on emissions last night at Council when he confused poisonous vehicle emissions such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulates (PM10) with carbon dioxide (CO2) which is a major cause of climate change but a normal constituent of the atmosphere and not injurious to health.

He persuaded his Tory colleagues to wreck a Lib Dem motion calling attention to the fact that at most testing sites in the borough NO2 levels were above EU limits and that particulate levels were also unsatisfactory.

Cllr Martin ElengornSaid Cllr Martin Elengorn "These vehicle-generated gases cause lung disease and trigger or exacerbate asthma and we were anxious that progress in reducing them both in the borough and Greater London should not falter. A non-contentious motion at Council to that effect was wrecked by Cllr Harrison's amendment removing all reference to NO2 and particulates and making instead a fatuous reference to the unrelated issue of domestic CO2 emissions. In this and other matters the local Tories are revealing themselves both ignorant and uncaring."
