• [Jun 04] Paul Teed writes: VINCE Cable has described the lack of social housing in his constituency is a real tragedy, after developers scrapped plans to build affordable homes as part of the proposed Twickenham station redevelopment.
[He] said constituents "often living in very desperate circumstances" visited him every week asking for help with accommodation. He described the problem as a real tragedy and said it was one of the top three concerns on which people contacted him for advice.
Cllr Geoffrey Samuel, deputy leader of Richmond Council, said the authority would not treat social housing as a key factor when it considered Solum Regeneration's application to [redevelop Twickenham station] . . [he] said residents rated affordable housing as a "very low priority" in the council's All in One survey . . But Dr Cable said: "You can't take it as gospel if 85 % of the people haven't replied." . .
