• [May 16]: THE official opening on Friday of the new Teddington School building has been hailed by Liberal Democrats as a lasting legacy of the investment they put into the school during their four year administration from 2006 to 2010.
The £37 million project to completely rebuild the school with a state-of-the-art, eco friendly, building was largely complete by the time of the local elections last year. £25 million towards the cost of the school came from the previous Labour Government's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) funding, with the remaining £12 million provided by the previous Liberal Democrat council.
Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Stephen Knight, who was the lead-councillor on the project for four years, said after Friday's official opening event:
"This wonderful new school building will shape the lives of young people in the Teddington area for generations to come. Its completion marks years of hard work by the staff and governors at the school and by the professional team who worked on the project. It would never have happened without both government funding and the political will of the previous Liberal Democrat council administration, who took the decision to invest almost £12 million in the project, against stiff political opposition at the time. The Liberal Democrats are extremely proud that we were able to build the school this fantastic new building and proud of the legacy we have left future generations of young people in the Teddington area."
