• [May 13] IN the last year Richmond's Tories have announced all sorts of plans, proposals and feasibility studies. But precious little action. At the 10 May Cabinet more plans were announced, but all that is being done on the so-called "Uplift" programme are feasibility studies.
Over the months many proposals have been floated for Whitton, and Whitton High Street in particular, and consultation exercises have been done, but almost nothing has happened. The most important change in Whitton High Street is the opening of the new Lidl store. This will be a magnet shop which will help the other traders, but its arrival has nothing to do with all the posturing about "uplift" from the Council.
In Hampton, Ham, Mortlake and Barnes there are "Uplift" proposals. But again all that is happening are feasibility studies. Not only are there no firm plans for improvements in these areas, but no money has been put in the budget other than that carried over from the Lib Dem administration. Considerable priority was given by the Lib Dems to these five areas of relative disadvantage, but all this was scrapped by the Tories.
David Williams, Lib Dem spokesperson for Finance, said, "If Richmond's Tory Council genuinely wants to help these five areas of the borough, they won't get far on feasibility studies. They need real commitment , and the new money for the projects talked about. 'Action not words' to repeat an old Tory slogan."
