• [May 13] CONSERVATIVE-run Richmond Council's plans to raise an extra £3 million in new fees and charges from residents whilst claiming to freeze Council Tax have been described as a cynical con-trick by opposition Liberal Democrat councillors, who have likened the plans to running the council like a no-frills airline.
Cllr Stephen Knight, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition, said: "The Conservatives seem to want to run a 'Ryanair style' council. They proudly claim they intend to freeze Council Tax, but at the same time they are cynically planning to hit residents with £3 million of new 'hidden' charges for services. There will be new 'admin fees' for arranging social care, higher fees for cemeteries and allotments and new parking charges during the evenings and weekends. This is a cynical con-trick that will load costs on to those residents most in need. Perhaps if these new stealth taxes were going to be used to protect vital services, then people might understand, but they come at the same time as massive cuts to services for the vulnerable."
