• [May 18] Vince Cable writes: LAST weekend I attended a really encouraging event: an open day at the Hampton Wick skate park. Dozens of young people were competing on stake boards and BMX bikes, many with great skill. There was a terrific atmosphere: noisy and enthusiastic but good natured and tolerant.
. . There is a major, longstanding, problem of young people leaving school unemployable and also unsuitable for further study: the so called NEETs. I am working in government to expand apprenticeships, basic skill training and work placements. I believe we must not write off these young people but support them. They are the future.
