• [May 18]: RICHMOND'S Liberal Democrats have welcomed the decision by the Conservative administration to introduce filming of Planning Committee meetings for broadcast on the Council's website but are urging the Council to go further to extend the process to the Council's four Overview & Scrutiny Committees.
Liberal Democrat Councillors are concerned that Conservative members of these committees often simply rubber stamp contentious decisions without submitting them to any rigorous analysis. By extending filming to Overview and Scrutiny Committees, the Liberal Democrats hope that the Conservatives will be more minded towards examining policies fully rather than passing through contentious decisions on the nod.
Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Stephen Knight said: "I think members of the public would be shocked to see how little scrutiny some of the council's most contentious decisions are subjected to by Conservative members of scrutiny committees. More often than not they simply use their majority to drive through decisions and it is left to Liberal Democrats to do all the scrutinising. To ensure that the public can see what's going on, these committees should be video recorded and broadcast in the same way as planning committee."
