What voters need to know for Thursday 5 May
April 29, 2011 9:50 AM
• WITH a UK-wide referendum on the voting system to elect Members of Parliament on Thursday 5 May, Richmond Council is reminding voters in Richmond upon Thames what they need to know to have their say on polling day:
- Polling stations will be open from 7am - 10pm. You should have received a card with details of your local polling station. If not, please call: 020 8891 7775
- When voting at a polling station, it's helpful to take your poll card with you. But if you don't have it, as long as you have registered, you can still vote.
- Polling station staff will give you ballot papers for the UK-wide referendum. Staff will not be able to give you ballot papers after 10pm, so make sure you arrive in good time.
- Unlike the rest of the UK the vote is just for the Referendum, as London local elections were last year.
- The Referendum is on the voting system used for elections to the UK Parliament and the question being put to voters on Thursday 5 May is: "At present, the UK uses the 'first past the post' system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the 'alternative vote' system be used instead?"
- If you applied for a postal vote, it needs to be received by the Counting Officer by 10pm on Thursday 5 May. If you have left it too late to post back, you can hand it in at any polling station in the borough.
