• [Apr 05] Vince Cable writes: THERE are a lot of rumours swirling around the local NHS which reflect the combined pressures of cost cutting, administrative reorganisation and the proposed move to giving GPs control over commissioning for their patients . .
There is a campaign developing around Teddington Memorial Hospital though it is not at risk and is expanding . . I am seeking, on behalf of the Friends of TMH, a meeting with my cabinet colleague Andrew Lansley to safeguard the long term future of TMH. Our aim is to secure local community membership whatever the shifting kaleidoscope of NHS bodies.
But we mustn't lose sight of the purpose of the NHS: not particular administrative bureaucracies or buildings but to create a top class health universal care for all free at the point of use. The central task is easily lost sight of in the fog of administrative change.
