• [Mar 18]: JUST weeks after the Tories ploughed ahead with their decision to close the dementia day care centre at Tangley Hall, millions of pounds of new money is transferring from the NHS to the Council to fund social care. Council papers released this week confirm agreement has been reached between the Council and NHS Richmond to transfer more than five million pounds over the next two years. The money to be saved from closing Tangley is just £136,500 a year.
Lib Dem spokesperson for social care, Liz Jaeger said: "While the extra money for social care is very welcome, and even more than we had thought, it's unclear why a tiny proportion couldn't be used to retain intensive dementia day care on the Middlesex side of the river. There is a policy to provide dementia care close to home and yet the Tories are expecting residents in the north and west of the borough to endure long journeys to Ham. When the social care cuts were first proposed last September, no-one knew about this new funding in the pipeline. The new money gives some breathing space and a chance for reflection but the Tories remain resolved not to listen to the wishes of thousands of residents."
