Tories scrap climate change strategy at London’s greenest council

April 2, 2011 7:30 PM

Climate Change globe• [Apr 01]: RICHMOND Council, once London's greenest borough under the Lib Dems, is to abandon work to tackle climate change. Conservative-run Richmond Council published a paper for its environment scrutiny committee this week that signalled the end of the climate change strategy agreed by the previous Lib Dem Council, with future action limited to complying with legislation.

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson, said: "Richmond's Tory administration is clearly embarrassed that it is retreating from the then Lib Dem Council's 2009 Climate Change Strategy and has been attempting to prevent the Environment and Sustainability Overview and Scrutiny Committee from discussing the issue. After a promise of a paper for the March meeting of the Committee, there was nothing on the agenda.

After my protests a 'for information only' item was rushed out but it could not be discussed. We now have a firm promise of a proper paper for the June Committee and the public will be able to address the Committee. However it is evident that the Tories are taking a much more limited view of the Council's ability to help mitigate climate change, concentrating on home insulation. Their policies on transport, traffic and parking are likely to add to carbon emissions and their lack of commitment on the subject is evidenced by their reducing the size of the Sustainability team of officers and brigading it under Facilities Management."
