• [Apr 01]: PEOPLE in Whitton have been left wondering what has become of the promised improvements to their High Street. Following extensive consultation in the autumn, a programme of works was agreed with residents and businesses. Council letters went out telling people things were due to start on Monday 14th March. Over a fortnight on, there is no work going on at all.
Money for these improvements was first put aside by the then Lib Dem council over a year ago, in February 2010. After the May election and the change in council, we had to wait into August before hearing that the money for Whitton High Street was still there. "It is very frustrating, after all the delays already, that yet again this project seems to have gone on hold. And to cap it all, there is no explanation forthcoming", said Whitton Lib Dem councillor Arnie Gibbons. "We are told there is an 'uplift' strategy in the wings for Whitton, building on the Twickenham Area Action Plan and needing to be taken forward with the 'All in One' process. Why we need to build on a Twickenham plan when there have already been two consultations about Whitton town centre, in 2009 and 2010, is another mystery.'
"Whitton needs a boost as soon as possible, so I hope whatever it is they have up their sleeves proves worth waiting for" added Whitton Lib Dem councillor Liz Jaeger.
