• [Mar 18] STUDENTS in the borough are being reminded not to miss their chance to vote in the 2011 UK referendum on the voting system to elect MPs and register before 14 April. Research shows that as many as 22 % of students nationally are not on the electoral register. Many more are not aware that they can register to vote at both their home and University/college term-time addresses and then vote at whichever location they are living at the time of the poll.
Electoral Registration Officer Gillian Norton, said: "Many students make the mistake of thinking that if they are registered to vote at home they are not eligible to register whilst away at University or College. This is not true. What you can't do is vote in both places, but you can have a choice about where you vote. "Any students who are living in this borough and are not on the electoral register should take action now, otherwise they will be unable to vote here in the Referendum on 5 May."
The last date to register to vote or to apply to vote by post in the Referendum is: Thursday 14 April. For information on how you can register to vote go to http://www.richmond.gov.uk/vote or call 020 8891 7775
