• [Mar 13] Alex Barker writes: NICK Clegg told Liberal Democrats to cast aside the "comfort blanket of opposition" and grab the centre ground of British politics, as he stepped up attacks on bankers "looking out for themselves".
In a warmly received speech concluding a three-day conference in Sheffield, the deputy prime minister made a "radical liberal" pitch to middle England as he warned activists they could no longer count on leftwing protest votes.
. . "We are not on the left and we are not on the right. We have our own label: Liberal," Mr Clegg said. "We are liberals and we own the freehold to the centre ground of British politics. Our politics is the politics of the radical centre. We are governing from the middle, for the middle."
