• [Mar 04]: THE Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition on Richmond council has reacted angrily to news that staff at Tangley Hall day centre and the three other intensive day centres were issued with redundancy notices just hours before a council meeting called to debate the future of the centres. Conservative Councillors voted to reject a Liberal Democrat proposal to rethink the closure of Tangley Hall and Twickenham day centres despite 2,500 residents signing a petition calling on the council to keep them open.
Cllr Stephen Knight, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition, said: "If what we are told is true, that staff were issued with redundancy notices on the morning before the evening meeting to decide their future, then at the very least this shows a serious disregard for the democratic process and the authority of the full council. The Conservatives have shown complete disregard for the wishes of local people - 2,500 of which have signed a petition against these day centre closures - now it seems they don't even care what the council has to say either."
