• LOCAL Liberal Democrats will be joining the Friends of Richmond Libraries at a demonstration outside the doomed Heathfield Library at 2.30pm on Saturday 5th February to coincide with the national 'Save Our Libraries Day'.
Despite massive public protest, the Conservative Council intends to close Heathfield Library. The library had been due to move from its current site to new accommodation at Heathfield Junior School to make way for an NHS clinic, but the Conservatives have decided to cut the £500,000 budget provision set aside by the previous Lib Dem council to pay for the move to Heathfield School.
The national day of action is being sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals and the National Literacy Trust. The day was originally proposed by library campaigner and author Alan Gibbons.
Cllr Stephen Knight, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition, said: "There is huge public opposition to the closure of Heathfield Library, which serves one of the most socially disadvantaged areas of the borough and a large area of west Twickenham. The council has the money set aside to reprovide the library at Heathfield School, but shamefully is refusing to do so."
