Day Centres to close: Tories Break Pre-Election Promises By Refusing To Listen To Public Outcry

January 25, 2011 5:53 PM

• [Jan 24]: THE public gallery of York House was packed this evening as the Cabinet met to consider the decision to close Tangley Hall and Twickenham Intensive Day Centres.

Following the report from the cross party Overview & Scrutiny Task Group which recommended a package of alternative measures which would have allowed at least one year's reprieve to Tangley Hall residents had high hopes that the cabinet would show compassion and accept their findings. Over 2,500 local residents signed a petition calling on the council to reconsider their decision to close Tangley Hall.

The Cabinet rejected the findings of the Task Group and voted unanimously to accept the recommendation of the Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health & Housing to close Tangley Hall and Twickenham Day Centres.

Residents will recall the literature that the Conservatives issued across the borough in their bid to get elected. "A Conservative Council will put people first, listen to your views and act on them and protect key services". Last night's decision just goes to prove that the promises the Conservatives made before the election really aren't worth the paper they were printed on. They have failed to put people first. They have failed to listen to views. They have failed to act on those views. They have failed to protect key services.

It is interesting that the Conservatives claim that they need to save approximately £400,000 from the budget and that justifies this cut. By contrast they have chosen to abandon the CO2 related sliding scale of parking charges at a cost to the tax payer of approximately £400,000 a year. It is clear that the Tory Priority is tax breaks for gas guzzlers rather than care for the most vulnerable members of our society. The meeting broke up to shouts of "Shame!" and "Disgraceful" from the public gallery. Campaigners and Liberal Democrat Councillors have vowed to continue their fight to save these much loved and much valued services.
