• [Aug 17] Nick Clegg writes: IT'S 99 days since the new Coalition Government formed. The heat and fury of the General Election have already faded into memory. Voters have a full five years before they again decide who gets their support. If, by polling day, you felt worn down by the relentless advances of the political parties, even 2015 may seem too soon.
But in government we're already having to think about the next election . . when MPs meet next month . . we'll be making major changes to the way we're elected. We'll be legislating for constituency boundaries to be independently redrawn so that they're more similarly sized . . And we'll be setting the terms of a referendum on the voting system.
. . So things could look very different in 2015. A new constituency map giving votes more equal weight. An entirely different voting system, or, at least, the same system, but finally tested against public opinion. Together these changes will breathe new legitimacy into the way we conduct elections. The next one may be five years away but we're already busy making sure we get it right.
