• RICHMOND Tory plans to scrap the planning policy that half of all new homes should be affordable, will leave poorer families homeless and 'reserve Richmond for the rich' warn Liberal Democrat councillors.
Liberal Democrats have hit out at plans by the new Conservative administration to scrap the Council planning policy that 50% of new homes built in the borough should be affordable.
Cllr John Coombs, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Housing said: "There is an urgent need for more affordable housing in the borough, especially family sized homes if we are not to become a borough reserved for the rich.
"It is totally disingenuous for the local Tory manifesto to have promised to 'secure more affordable homes' whilst they plan to remove the requirement for any to be built.
"In contrast, the Liberal Democrats invested almost £10 millions over the past four years in new affordable housing and provided surplus council land as well as ensuring private housebuilders provided their share of homes for the less well off."
