• [Apr 09]: 'SINCE May 2006 I have served as the Cabinet member for Traffic, Transport and Parking. In 2006 our manifesto priorities were to put Environment at the heart of everything we do and to promote Sustainability. During this time I have achieved the largest ever funding from Transport for London (TfL) of over £20m for transport related initiatives, including:
• 20 mph zones where residents have shown a wish for them.
• Becoming the first borough to fuel its fleet on recycled cooking oil saving around £55,000 and 1,170 tonnes of CO2 p.a..
• Business cycling incentives whereby employees can buy bicycles and get a tax benefit.
• CO2 related parking charges so that those with the lowest emission cars pay the least.
• Cycle training in all our school
• Expanding Car Clubs from 5 spaces to 105, increasing the number of members to over 2,000.
• Extending bus routes - 490 to Heathrow and Pools on the Park and the 110 to West Middlesex Hospital.
• Free parking on Bank Holidays.
• Legible London signs.
• More and better cycle lanes.
• Nearly 50 % of our bus stops are Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant.
• Over £2m funding for the Smarter Travel initiative from TfL; this has increased the level of sustainable travel by walking and cycling.
• Residents' Parking zones - but only where residents have shown that they want them.
• Richmond Card and payment by mobile phone to ensure lower charges.
• Richmond Town Centre: new paving and highways.
• Safety measure around schools.
We have looked to benefit every user of our roads and pavements to ensure that they are safe and that they can use the most environmentally sustainable means of transport. We want to ensure that Richmond remains the greenest borough in London. I want to continue to ensure that this is the case in everything we do in Traffic, Transport and Parking to benefit all our residents, businesses and visitors.'
