• Council Leader Serge Lourie writes: 'RICHMOND upon Thames Liberal Democrats are one of the first council groups in London to sign up to the London Wildlife Trust [LWT] Manifesto 2010. As one of the greenest councils in the country we have pledged to put the environment at the heart of our decision making. As part of this we put great store with the natural environment and the wildlife in the borough.
We have agreed to:
• Champion active local community groups and individuals volunteering, who protect the natural environment within Richmond upon Thames.
• Commit to an environmentally sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games and to a lasting green legacy for both people and wildlife.
• Encourage the development of wildlife surveys in local neighbourhoods for the enhancement of our knowledge about the changes in environment in the face of climate change.
• Encourage the protection of garden land from development wherever possible, within Richmond upon Thames, and promote the LWT "Garden for a Living London" campaign.
• Ensure that Richmond upon Thames will both adapt to and mitigate for climate change through actively facilitating green infrastructure and the adoption of low carbon policies and practices.
• Facilitate outdoor environmental education for school children throughout the borough.
• Safeguard biodiversity by protecting and conserving wildlife sites and supporting the delivery of the London-wide and local Biodiversity Action Plans.
• Support the implementation of the Green Grid across London and throughout the borough with a particular focus on social housing green spaces, providing opportunities to support natural play and local food-growing.
• Support the protection of the Green Belt, Metropolitan Open Land and the Blue Ribbon river network within Richmond upon Thames in order to conserve key landscape assets.
We also agree with LWT that "the challenges facing Londoners and their green city during 2010 are both numerous and very serious. The Trust's work and your support have never been more important to the future of London's wildlife and people's appreciation of our great city."
