Two way cycle route in latest stage of £2m upgrade

February 27, 2010 8:01 PM

• A MAJOR improvement to Riverside Drive in Ham, backed by Richmond Council's Cabinet, will see more than £250,000 spent on upgrading the area, including the installation of a two way cycle path.

Whitton's High Street will also be upgraded next year with new surfacing, street furniture and tree planting as part of the authority's support for its town centres. Both schemes are part of the final tranche of projects to improve the environment for residents in the North Barnes, Ham, Hampton, Heathfield and Mortlake and Whitton.

Cllr Geoff Acton, Richmond Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "These schemes are part of a £2 million programme to improve areas where many of our residents live and shop every day. In the case of Ham, much of the money has been secured from Transport for London and developers, so residents will see a lot of benefit with less cost from their local Council Tax. As many of the improvements have been within local shopping centres it's good news for the small businesses as it should help to attract customers which is critical during the recession. These schemes are about improving the environment and quality of life for all our residents."

The £2million package of projects has already led to substantial new tree planting in North Barnes and an upgrade to the frontage of Castelnau Community Centre. Further work is currently being carried out in Castelnau north shopping parade.

Residents in Ham have seen work carried out to the shopping area on the corner of Ham Street and Ashburnham Road, and Back Lane is underway, which has received funding from TfL. Savings made in this area have allowed the major works in Riverside Drive to be added to the programme. They will include extra tree planting, the two way cycle path and a better quality wider footpath. More efficient street lighting, on lower columns will be included. The setting of Ham Lands will be improved, all of which will extend the village theme of the area. The Council is putting up £100,000 for this project with further funding being secured from TfL and developers through section 106 agreements.

In Whitton, works in Nelson Road have been completed and improvements will be carried out in the High Street. These have not been designed yet, and like Riverside Drive, residents will be consulted before work starts.

This programme of works was first approved by the Cabinet two years ago, but savings made during the work have allowed extra projects, especially Riverside Drive and Whitton High Street to be included. In Heathfield, streetscape improvements are advanced at the shopping parades at Hanworth Road and Powdermill Lane and will be completed by summer. In Mortlake, Sheen Lane has been upgraded and the public space at the Sheen Lane Centre improved. Extra trees will be planted and footpaths will be improved in Mortlake next year.

Improvements to Bishops Grove and the Longford river crossing at the end of Dean Road are nearing completion and streetscape improvements will take place at Hampton Nursery Lands shopping area over the next two years. All the work will include sustainable street furniture, lighting, planting and materials, and will promote sustainable forms of transport.
