• AT least 17,000 Christmas trees have been recycled by Richmond Council this year through on-street collections and trees which have been dropped off at collection sites.
The Council's free tree recycling service has just come to an end, and Cllr Geoff Acton, Cabinet Member for Environment, said he was pleased with the number of trees which had been collected: "This is a good number, and it means that thousands of trees have not been cut up and dumped on to landfill sites. If we didn't recycle all these trees, our Landfill Tax payments, which we have to give to Government for waste which is thrown away, would undoubtedly be higher. The large number of trees which we collected is a sign of everyone's commitment to recycling. I know the collection service was affected by the snow during January, and I'd like to thank people for bearing with us while our workers gritted roads and pavements."
After trees are collected for recycling, they are shredded and compacted before being mixed with other garden waste and turned into compost.
