• A VISIT to Twickenham's embankment is now an even more enjoyable experience thanks to major environmental improvements which have brightened up the riverbank area.
The £500,000 works, carried out by Richmond Council and the London's Arcadia project, were officially unveiled on Friday afternoon by Cllr Geoff Acton, the Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, and Cllr Celia Hodges, the borough's mayor. They include more than 20 new cycle parking spaces to encourage people to ride into the town centre.
Cllr Acton said: "I think the transformation of the embankment has been fantastic, it shows what good quality design can achieve in opening up the riverside frontage for the benefit of everyone who visits, lives or works in Twickenham. The embankment has been in need of tidying up for a long time and since we've completed this stretch I've noticed many more people spending time there, particularly at lunchtimes."
Cllr David Trigg, Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking, added: "I'm pleased to see the extra parking facilities have been put in place and that the car parking area has been upgraded. This is good news for people coming in to Twickenham."
The work has included new benches, litter bins and surfacing, which will improve access, particularly for disabled people. New trees and shrubs have been planted. Improved street lighting will enhance safety for people walking there at night. Old, broken brick planters and diseased trees have been removed and paved areas have been improved. Parking provision has been rearranged and new disabled bays have also been provided. There is also a heritage sign and floor plaque commemorating Eel Pie Island's music history.
The stretch of embankment which has been upgraded runs from the slipway to Water Lane. Funding for the work came from the Council, the London's Arcadia project and was match funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The work has benefited from the expertise of Tony Kirkham, from Kew Gardens, who gave advice on the new trees which have been chosen for the area. This new scheme was the culmination of extensive consultation which included more than 20 meetings which provided valuable input into the final design.
