• [Dec 03]: THE proposed Shene Academy took a step forward today, after the Minister for State for Schools and Learners gave approval for the Council and co-sponsor the Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) to progress to the feasibility stage.
In this stage, details of the proposed Academy will be worked up and consultation with parents and other local residents will take place.
Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Education and Children's Services on Richmond Council, said: "We are delighted to have been given approval to progress with the plans. We will now be working closely with AET to convert our vision for the Academy into solid proposals. These proposals will give local parents firm information on how we plan to progress the school and a timescale for the changes. In the new year we will be consulting with parents and local residents on the plans for the new school. We will only make our final decision once that consultation is complete, but if all goes well, I would hope to see the new Academy opening in September 2010.
"Improving our secondary schools has been a key priority of this administration. We have achieved a lot in the last three years and I believe the academies programme will be instrumental in continuing this improvement. In the case of Shene, it is going to enable us to lever in millions of pounds for additional capital improvements, that we wouldn't otherwise be able to access."
