• NOMINATIONS are invited for the UK Youth Parliament; Richmond Council is urging aspiring young politicians to take advantage of a host of available information, prior to registering themselves in October.
The Council has produced an information DVD and will be visiting schools in a bid to spark interest, and are encouraging people to contact them if they are interested. Anyone aged 11-19 who lives, works, plays or goes to school in the borough can put themselves forward. If elected they will work with local councillors, MPs, schools and other young people on issues which affect them.
Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said:
"This is a fantastic opportunity for young people who have an interest in their local area to get involved in the decision-making that affects them and their peers. It is also an excellent way to develop new skills and gain new experiences. While the nomination process doesn't open until the 1 October, now is a good time to start thinking about whether you want to get involved. There is a whole raft of information available and I would encourage anyone interested to get in touch."
Richmond's current Youth Parliament Member, Umaru Saidu, added:
"If it counts it matters, so the youth parliament is about taking a stand for what we as young people believe in. Empowering us as young people to stand for what matters to us united as one."
Applications can be handed in from the 1 October, with closing date coming at the start of November. Successful candidates will then be put forward for a borough wide election held between January and February 2010, which will see one Parliament Member and two deputies chosen to represent Richmond upon Thames on the London Parliament.
Once elected members will organise events, run campaigns, make speeches, hold debates and ensure the views of young people are listened to by decision makers.
The Council's Youth Support Service will be provide a range of training opportunities to ensure chosen candidates have sufficient knowledge of public speaking and campaigning.
