• RICHMOND upon Thames has achieved its highest ever rate of recycling and the Council has thanked residents for their part in the success. The figure has risen from 32 % in 2006/7 to nearly 42 % now.
The borough now has the highest recycling rate in South West London and is among the top four in the capital. The Council has put down its success to the simplicity of its new containers scheme, adding plastic bottles and cardboard to the list of products which can now be recycled and bringing in new, more efficient collection trucks.
Cllr Geoff Acton, Richmond Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "I'm pleased with what is a significant increase in our recycling rate. We are the best in west London and one of the best in the capital. This has been a real joint effort between the Council and local people who have responded to the new scheme we put in place last year. I would like to thank our residents in particular for their co-operation and support over the last 12 months.
"But now we have a new challenge. We still want to increase our recycling but now we need to turn our attention to reducing how much waste we produce in the first place. And the benefits of this are significant. If every house can make a meaningful reduction to the waste it produces we stand to save a significant amount of money - money that can be spent on services rather than buried in the ground."
"So this is what we need to do - keep recycling - but begin to produce less waste in the first place. The combination to the two will make significant savings and help our environment at the same time. Over the coming months we will be providing information on how residents can help and get involved in the councils campaign to reduce waste and save money."
• The most recent recycling actual figures:
2007/08 = 29,400 tonnes recycled
2008/09 = 33,800 tonnes recycled - up 15 %.
