• LONG awaited improvements to Barn Elms Sports ground moved closer on July 7, with the Council beginning a £30,000 refurbishment of the six lane athletics track. The works will be complete by the time schools return in September.
In addition to this following a borough wide vote by young people, £150k has been allocated to provide a new BMX/skateboarding facility and from autumn this year, the Council will be providing further investment to improve the quality of the pitches.
Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure said: "I'm delighted that the running track is to receive the attention it needs and will be in top condition again by the time schools start in September. The users of Barn Elms have campaigned for years for improved drainage and the money we're putting in from this autumn will make a big difference to the quality of pitches and really help to improve drainage.
"I am particularly delighted that the proposal for a BMX/Skateboard facility at Barn Elms came top in the vote. Young people have long requested this facility in the North of the borough and we know from experience elsewhere that these type of facilities are hugely popular with young people.
"We are probably the healthiest and fittest borough in the UK with programmes like Competitive Edge playing a huge role in getting more young people involved in competitive sports and team games. And we also know from the recent place survey that providing things for young people to do is a priority for our residents; so all in all this is a very important project for our local area."
