£1 million for more borough playgrounds

August 26, 2009 5:28 PM

• CHILDREN and young people will soon get the chance to enjoy even more of the borough's parks and open spaces, after Richmond Council announced a £1 million investment in local playgrounds.

The money will be put to towards enhancing existing play areas and creating new ones, with 11 potential sites already identified. The Council will be talking to local residents to find out what they want to see done. Commenting on the plans, Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure, said:

"Making sure our children and young people have top class facilities to exercise and enjoy themselves in, is something we are dedicated to providing. I'm very pleased we're able to start this work. The new and enhanced play areas will be fully accessible, offering something to families and children of all ages. In the coming months we will be speaking to local people about what they would like to see in the areas near them. I hope as many people as possible give us their views as this will enable us to make the best use of the money."

The enhancements will use more natural materials, such wood, water and sand. Work on the new play areas will begin in autumn 2009 and is expected to be complete by autumn 2010. More sites will benefit from the funding in the second year.

The Council has used the results of recent public consultations to identify possible sites for the first phase of the programme. The proposed sites are:

Broom Road Recreation Ground, Teddington; Castelnau Recreation Ground, Barnes; Chertsey Court Playground, Mortlake; Edgar Road Playground, Heathfield; Ham Village Green; Hampton Common; Hampton Travellers' Site; Heathfield Recreation Ground; Kneller Gardens, Twickenham; Raleigh Road Recreation Ground, Richmond; Sandy Lane Recreation Ground, Ham.

Consultation with residents and community groups on the location and design of the play spaces in these eleven areas will start in late August 2009; consultation to identify possible locations for the remaining eleven play spaces will start in November 2009.
