• THE team which keeps the highways and byways of Richmond upon Thames clean has scooped a major new award for improving local environmental quality.
Sterling efforts in a range of areas including street cleaning and improvements, graffiti removal, good practice and innovation helped the borough's Street Scene department take third place in the inaugural London-wide Capital Standards awards. Partnership working with the police, Community Payback and Friends of the River Crane Environment contributed to the overall success, as did close and effective work with the borough's parks, highways and probation services. Part of the assessment was a three-year analysis, which showed Richmond upon Thames had reduced the level of unsatisfactorily clean roads from 32 % to just 12 %.
Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said: "The borough's success is remarkable, given that we are one of the few councils with fortnightly rather than weekly, residential street cleaning and a very tight budget. The Council's commitment to the environment is borne out by the splendid work undertaken to gain this award and I congratulate everyone who has contributed to this success, both Council employees and our community partners. Most importantly, the level of satisfaction with street cleaning has shot up over the past couple of years and we intend to improve on this even further."
