• AT a public meeting at the Sheen Lane Centre on Thursday, 5 February, called by Susan Kramer, local residents expressed their views on the future of the Stag Brewery in Mortlake.
The owners of the brewery, InBev, are consulting with employees on the closure of the brewery where beer has been brewed for some 600 years. Representatives of the brewery, the union, the local councillors, Eleanor Stanier, Anna Davies and Zoe McCleod, and Susan Kramer shared views and responded to questions in the well attended meeting. Complete closure of the brewery would likely be in December 2010.
Reporting on the meeting, Susan Kramer said: "The turn-out of local people despite dreadful weather shows the intense interest in the Stag Brewery and this site. A large majority of those present would prefer to see brewing continue at Mortlake and expressed support for the skilled employees who will lose their jobs with a closure. If the site is redeveloped, the local community must have a strong voice in its future and this meeting provided an early opportunity to get their views heard.
"Top of the residents' list is concern that the playing fields are protected and the sports use enhanced. People also called for a mixed use of the site, including employment opportunities, rather than all housing. High rise blocks and gated communities would also be unacceptable and out of keeping with the area.
"Any new housing, which should include affordable housing, would require a new primary school and other provision for public services. Traffic would be a nightmare and buses would need to serve the site with the opportunity used to close the dangerous Avondale bus station.
"A call by the Mortlake Community Association for a community centre was widely supported. Residents felt very strongly that any redevelopment should reflect the history Mortlake, both brewing and tapestry making, perhaps with a museum. Public access to the river front should remain and also be enhanced."
Councillor Davies will clarify the listing status of the old warehouse on the site, the status of the playing fields and the trees. She will also work with the Council officers for supplementary planning guidance.
Susan Kramer will meet with InBev directors in Belgium to share local concerns.
