Heathrow Decision Delay Shows Government Is Running Scared - Kramer

December 9, 2008 5:48 PM

heathrow bannerSusan Kramer writes: "I AND the residents of south west London will be fervently hoping that this is another small sign that the Government is finally seeing sense, and realising that it is clutching at straws by pursuing these plans.

I believe the Government is on the run over Heathrow expansion. The economic crisis means it will be exceedingly difficult to build the third runway, European air pollution targets stand to be breached, and public opposition grows day by day. With opposition mounting on the streets and on the benches in the Commons, the Government must listen and scrap these plans once and for all. "Labour is waking up to the fact that it would face a huge rebellion if it were to debate these plans in Parliament. The Government is slowly losing its nerve over Heathrow expansion and is desperately trying to smother the opposition. With millions of people standing to suffer more noise, more pollution and more disruption because if Heathrow expands, the Government should be taking the plans to a vote in the House of Commons."
