• 'THE morning after. Always a sensitive time. And so it was for Nick Clegg, a year ago, the morning after he took over from Menzies Campbell as leader of the Liberal Democrats . .
Shelagh Fogarty writes for Total Politics: 'He had gamely agreed to a rather unconventional, quick-fire interview on Five Live Breakfast, taking questions on everything from drug-taking to the Middle East. It was the God question, though, which left him exposed. There was a huge reaction to his admission that he doesn't believe in God, and when I meet him in his elegant Commons office a year on, I'm not surprised when he tells me his frankness can cause him problems, and that the biggest change in him since becoming leader is the thickness of his skin. "Which is as it should be", he tells me. "I've been very keen not to do what I think a lot of politicians do, which is retreat into a shell of repeated one liners and try and evade. I try to be as frank as I can be, so I think I've become tougher; but I hope I'm nonetheless candid in what I say." . . '
