Green light for boost in social housing

The decision to develop nine Richmond Council-owned sites for rented social housing developments has been hailed as a major boost for the Council's drive to secure more affordable homes in the borough.
The Council's Cabinet last night (September 3) approved the development of the land, with the sites split between Richmond Housing Partnership and the Richmond upon Thames Churches Housing Trust. Subject to planning approval, the sites will be developed into 35 family sized homes, with the majority earmarked for three bedroom houses. This initiative is the first part of a wider strategy towards a range of Council owned sites that is designed to deliver many more affordable homes than is strictly required in planning terms. The developments will be designed to meet high standards of sustainability and include the use of renewable energy. The decision followed a tendering process in which four housing associations submitted bids and proposals for the sites.
Cllr Stephen Knight, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Resources on Richmond Council, said: "The development of these sites is excellent news and will provide a major boost to social housing provision in the borough. As one of the most affluent areas in the capital, it is a real challenge identifying sites which are suitable for the development of both affordable housing and social rented homes.
Cllr Denise Carr, Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing added: "These nine council sites will be developed over the next two years. The council is investing £3.645 million to deliver 35 family sized homes for rent - a clear demonstration of our commitment to increase the supply and range of affordable housing for borough residents. I am delighted that we can use these nine sites to improve the borough's housing stock for the benefit of people on lower incomes. I am particularly pleased that at Monday nights cabinet meeting my colleagues agreed to put £3.65 million towards the project to deliver these much needed family homes."
