Teddington Residents Look Set To Vote On Parking Controls Near Station

May 9, 2004 11:37 AM

The long-promised consultation on resident-priority parking controls in Teddington has final happened and the results show a clear demand for parking controls in some areas of the town.

The results are to be published in the next couple of weeks and discussed at the Council's Transport Consultative Group (TCG) on 26th May (6.30pm at York House, Twickenham). Residents are welcome to attend the meeting and may register to speak by emailing j.giffin@richmond.gov.uk by noon on 25th May.

The results, seen by local councillors, show that residents support 2-hour parking controls in areas close to the railway station, with pockets of demand in other parts of the town. Unless Tory councillors veto further work, the Council's engineers will now examine the results of the consultation and design a detailed scheme to go back to residents in the areas concerned. Any controls will require clear support from residents before they can be implemented.

The consultation, on a range of controls aimed at making life easier for residents, followed years of pressure from residents and local councillors concerned at the growing parking problems in many parts of the town. Increasing numbers of commuters, shoppers and residents competing for on-street parking makes parking anywhere near home a daily headache for many residents.

Lib Dem councillor for Teddington Stephen Knight said: "Parking problems in many local roads are dreadful. I hope that this consultation will find the best way forward. The important thing now is that the Tory Council must listen to what residents have to say and not just ignore the problem and hope it will go away."
